Earlier this month, Robert took an in-depth look at three recent offerings from Banfi, an Italian producer offering a variety of wines at a wide range of price points and styles. For an encore, we’re pouring a glass of the 2017 Banfi Brunello.
Bright and lively, the nose provides a perfect balance of earthy and fruit elements as notes of cherry, vanilla, and red licorice vine mingle nicely with eucalyptus and deep forest floor. Some patience in the glass is required, but it is well worth a modest wait to experience the bottle at full potential. Much like the 2016, there’s a strong tobacco leaf and cedar entry on the palate, giving way to wild herbs and muted floral notes as matters carry forward. The herbaceous influence hangs around at the finish, with a bright and surprising relapse into cherry territory. Pairs well with a thoughtfully constructed plate of red meats and a slab of Parmigiano-Reggiano and aged Pecorino (or both!) and will most likely improve with a year in the cellar.
