Review: 2019 Palombara Primitivo Di Manduria DOC

Over the last year or so, we have reviewed several primitivos from the Puglia region of Italy, and today we try one more, this one made with grapes drawn exclusively from Lizzano, in the Tarantine Ionian arch. The bottle is attractive, showcasing art by Dino Sambiasi. Let’s dive right in.

This is a bold wine that showcases the distinctive character of primitivo wines from the Puglia region. On the nose and palate, there’s juicy, dark black cherry fruit and some smoke joined with sundried tomato and an herbal, oregano note. The wine’s high acidity and herbal character give it an enjoyable, rustic character. Midpalate, there is a light cough syrup note, but it’s minor. Fans of primitivo will want to seek out this wine, which will pair brilliantly with well-seasoned food such chicken Provençal.
