Monita is a new tequila launched by Black entrepreneur Serita Braxton, and it promises a “unique, smooth taste” and a “flavor-filled profile.” It’s 100% agave, but there’s not much additional information available about agave sourcing or pina ages. While the three traditional expressions are available, we received only the blanco for review. Let’s give it a try.
If you’re looking for a tequila without the punch of the “tequila,” Monita’s your jam. The nose is as mild as can be, the agave elements coming across closer to lime leaf, counterbalanced by white sugar, sesame oil, and just a touch of ruddy earth tones. I’ve had vodkas more fragrant than this tequila — for better or for worse. The palate is just as delicate and sweet, leaning on lemon-lime elements, cane syrup, a pinch of pepper, and, in the end, vague notes of aloe, cigar box, and evergreen. It tastes like tequila but not like tequila, if that makes any sense. I’m not sure that it does either, but maybe I’m still just trying to wrap my mind around this.
