Review: 2021 Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

Our regular sojourn to the vineyards of Mendoza, Argentina’s Trapiche carries on in 2023 with a recent pair of offerings, a malbec and cabernet sauvignon, both from its “Oak Cask” line. Trapiche prides itself on a reputation of accessibility in both price and taste, so let’s see if this year’s offerings keep that consistency on the right track.

2021 Trapiche Oak Cask Cabernet Sauvignon – Bearing a resemblance to last year’s vintage, but with less dark fruit on the nose, allowing for more complexity from notes of black pepper, vanilla, and a faint touch of campfire smoke. The black and red fruit regain footing on the palate, and the oak influence provides some much-needed depth. Quite accessible as an introduction to Argentinian cabernets, this would do fine as a bottle for the host of your next invited dinner party, where grilled meats are the order of the day. B+ / $10

2021 Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec – Much like other malbecs from Trapiche, this one comes out swinging from the bottle with intense blackberry and spice, but also finds a slight balsamic note which fades. A bit of time decanting provides much-needed space to sort itself out. Dark fruit and vanilla notes run constant, the vanilla showing courtesy of the oak influence, while big tannins and bright acidity frame the palate. Quite oaky on the finish, but not so much that it becomes an undesirable guest. It’s a decent bottle at this price point but would certainly be served well by being forgotten in the cellar for a bit of time. B / $10 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
