Review: Duck Pond Cellars 2022 Pinot Gris and 2021 Pinot Noir

Established in the Dundee Hills and Willamette Valley AVAs and a member of the Great Oregon Wine Company family of wines, winemaker Julia Cattrall uses the Duck Pond line to place an emphasis on sustainability and all-natural wines. In 2020, it produced its first Natural Path Production wines certified by the Clean Label Project which, as the organization’s website states, is a consumer standard for food and consumer product quality and safety.

2022 Duck Pond Cellars Pinot Gris – Boldly tropical with notes of key lime and honeydew melon. A light floral touch complements traces of lemon and guava before things take a turn for the interesting. A sharp note of minerality emerges over the duration of a lengthy but dry finish, and it heightens the floral notes while muting the fruit character. It’s challenging but worth exploring if something a bit out of the ordinary is what’s requested. B+ / $16

2021 Duck Pond Cellars Pinot Noir – Dense with cherry and raspberry, and a touch of rhubarb on the nose. Notes of oak and cola emerge on the palate, but never at the expense of the fruit elements which expand with time in the glass. Soft tannins and plum compote notes arrive toward the finish, wrapping things up in a way that is easy to drink and enjoyable. A- / $20
