Another pair of releases from the negociants of Cameron Hughes. For those unfamiliar with the premise behind Cameron Hughes’ operations, it’s quite simple: they (Cameron or some delegates) travel the world sourcing a wide range of wines from vineyards, bringing them to market under their own label at financially feasible price points. This time around, we’re enjoying two offerings that have quite opposite characteristics, a Pinot Noir sourced from Napa Valley’s St. Helena and Pope Valley AVAs, and a Gavi from the Langhe district in the Piedmont region in northwest Italy.
2018 Cameron Hughes Lot 883 Pinot Noir Napa Valley – This arrives out of the bottle and fits the glass full steam ahead, with big aromas of lavender, black cherry, and a slight touch of fresh plum after a solid decant. It’s full-bodied and well-balanced, with bright acidity framing a core of baking spices, currant, and black cherry. The finish is where things deviate slightly and surprisingly, all for the better, with black pepper and cranberry providing another level of complexity. 2020 Cameron Hughes Lot 820 Gavi Piemonte DOCG – A clean and straightforward wine with a bold note of Meyer lemon zest balanced by yellow pear and wildflower. There’s a touch of minerality and salinity supporting the citrus fruit throughout, and the lingering finish provides notes of roasted almond and green apple that hang around for quite a bit of time, but which never overstay their welcome. This was hard to put down and may be worth picking up a few bottles to serve with Mother’s Day brunch. Or any other brunch, for that matter. A- / $15 [BUY IT NOW FROM CAMERON HUGHES]
