Review: 2021 Three Sticks Chardonnay Origin and Pinot Noir Monarch

Three Sticks isn’t just known as the place where Kyrsten Sinema interned, it’s also the home of some pretty nice wines. Today we dig into two new releases from the 2021 vintage, including a chardonnay and a pinot noir — both staples from the outfit.

2021 Three Sticks Chardonnay Origin Durell Vineyard – A gorgeous, opulent expression of chardonnay, with just the right amount of oak-driven butter and vanilla in the mix.. Notes of guava, lemon curd, and light grapefruit peel lead the charge, vanilla ice cream notes tempering the fruit with a soothing layer of dessert. Deftly balanced between the two worlds of fruit and barrel-driven sweetness, this is a California chardonnay that never feels heavy, revealing itself in layers as it develops slowly in the glass over the course of the evening. A / $70

2021 Three Sticks Pinot Noir Monarch Sonoma County – A Sonoma-based multi-vineyard blend, this pinot offers a “greatest hits” of the region, showcasing ripe blackberry, plum, and tart cherry notes, all in a swirl. A bit on the gummy side as it develops on the palate, with a savory edge of sesame oil, roasted meats, and fresh sourdough, the body is missing some acidity that would be helpful at balancing out some of the weightier, more austere elements. That said, it’s a classic food pairing wine that works well with just about anything on the far side of happy hour. B+ / $75
